In studying the history of the construction of artificial limbs to sub stitute for lost legs, which has been transmitted to us by written words, objects of art and handicraft, objects found in excavations, and so forth, and learning of the development of the artificial leg through the centuries, one gains knowledge of the foundation on which modern prosthetics is based. Such an historical review, furthermore, permits one to appreciate what modern scientific prosthetics and rehabilitation have accomplished to date for the limbless.

Gait Emulator for Evaluation of Ankle–Foot Prostheses Capable of Turning

One of the challenges in the development of prostheses is the testing and tuning of the mechanism before testing with human subjects. It is a common practice in the industry to use testing platforms to tests new products for different properties such as strength and fatigue; however, few platforms have been developed for testing and tuning of ankle–foot prosthesis. Before testing the lower extr...

Stiffness and ultimate load of osseointegrated prosthesis fixations in the upper and lower extremity

BACKGROUND Techniques for the skeletal attachment of amputation-prostheses have been developed over recent decades. This type of attachment has only been performed on a small number of patients. It poses various potential advantages compared to conventional treatment with a socket, but is also associated with an increased risk of bone or implant-bone interface fracture in the case of a fall. We...

Conception, design and development of a low-cost intelligent prosthesis for one-sided transfemoral amputees

Introduction: Modern transfemoral knee prostheses are designed to offer comfort and self-confidence to amputees. These prostheses are mainly based upon either a passive concept, with a damping system, or an active computational intelligent design to control knee motion during the swing phase. In Brazil, most lower extremity amputees are unable to afford modern prostheses due to their high cost....
